NAYPYIDAW: An Indian state-owned arms manufacturing company has sent artillery barrels to military-ruled Myanmar, an activist group said on Wednesday, warning the junta could use these ammunition in its crackdown on dissent.
Myanmar has been in turmoil since the junta toppled Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government 2 years ago, ending a short democratic experiment and causing mass protests.
Rights groups say that the junta has used artillery barrages and air strikes against opposition groups as it struggles to end resistance, sparking international calls to stop supplying weapons to the military government.
Company sent 20 gun barrels
In October, state-owned arms manufacturing firm Yantra India Limited sent twenty gun barrels to Myanmar measuring 122 millimeters, shipping data available with activist group Justice for Myanmar revealed.
According to the data shared with AFP, the consignee for the cargo, which was valued at 330,000 dollars, was Innovative Industrial Technologies Company Limited, located in the commercial hub Yangon.
Last year, the same company obtained a junta tender to install and configure security tools at a data center.
Justice for Myanmar said that the barrels were probably used to make artillery for the military.
The company did not respond to emailed requests for their version.
