JUMMU, Occupied Kashmir: In a concerning incident that unfolded in the Ramban district of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, two revenue officials, including a naib tehsildar, were reportedly assaulted by Indian policemen.
The altercation has sparked outrage among their fellow colleagues and clerical staff at the Sanasar office within the district.
The altercation escalated when a group of agitated police officers confronted the naib tehsildar and his subordinate patwari, physically roughing them up and confining them to their office at Sanasar. The apparent cause of this confrontation was the removal of tents on a piece of land previously occupied by the police force.
It is worth noting that the police had, in the past year, requested the transfer of this particular parcel of land from the revenue department. However, their application was denied, and they were explicitly instructed to vacate the area. When the police failed to comply with this directive, employees from the revenue department took matters into their own hands, seizing the tents and boards that had been installed by the police.
This seizure of property by the revenue department employees quickly triggered a wave of protests outside the deputy commissioner’s office, with calls for action against the police personnel involved in the incident.
Harjeet Singh, the Chief of the Ramban Patwar Association, reported that All clerical staff of the deputy commissioner’s office and the revenue department went on a spontaneous strike and held a protest against the highhandedness of the police. He further emphasized that the protesters are demanding the immediate suspension of the police officers responsible and a high-level inquiry into the incident.
