ISLAMABAD/NEW DEHLI: Indian police arrested a man after he impersonated to be a high-ranking representative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Kiran Patel was visiting the Kashmir valley on March 2 when security officials detained him, the
BBC quoted the Press Trust of India as saying. Later, he was arrested.
Police have charged him with cheating, impersonation, and forgery. According to the police, Patel attempted to obtain “monetary” and “material rewards.”
When Patel appeared in court on Thursday, his arrest was made public. He claims to represent the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party with a verified Twitter account handle.
Patel posted pictures of “formal travels” to Kashmir that show him surrounded by paramilitary security on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.
According to PTI, on one occasion, Patel allegedly stated the government had directed him to locate purchasers for apple orchards in south Kashmir.
On a subsequent trip, he went to Gulmarg, a well-known ski resort, and asserted that the government had requested him to look into enhancing the area’s hotel accommodations.
According to reports, Patel received the greatest level of security, drove a bulletproof vehicle, and stayed in a five-star hotel while on his visits. According to court filings, security personnel discovered fake identification cards in his hands.
