Key points

  • Modi is under pressure after Trump’s India-Pakistan “mediation” offer
  • India says Kashmir is an internal matter
  • Trump’s offer is being described as a diplomatic failure for Modi

ISLAMABAD: Following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, opposition leaders in India have criticised the Modi government’s approach and raised questions about its handling of diplomacy and the involvement of a foreign leader in resolving the conflict.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Indian National Congress leader, led the charge and called for an immediate special session of Parliament.

“This will also be an opportunity to demonstrate our collective resolve to meet the challenges ahead,” Gandhi wrote in a letter to Modi, emphasising the need for a debate and accountability in Parliament.

“Urgent matters”

He highlighted the recent Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor, and the Trump-mediated ceasefire as urgent matters requiring parliamentary attention.

The Indian National Congress demanded the same.

“Rahul Gandhi writes to PM Modi, urging the Opposition’s unanimous call to convene a special session of Parliament immediately to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and the India-Pakistan ceasefire, announced by US President Trump.”

“Corruption in Rafale deal”

Meanwhile, Indian Congress leaders also “exposed corruption in Rafale deal”.

Randeep Singh Surjewala demanded a fair investigation into the Rafale scandal. He said the pre-arranged match between the BJP government and Dassault cannot conceal the Rafale corruption.

Sanjay Nirupam said corruption of around INR410 billion has occurred in the Rafale deal. He said the actual price of the Rafale aircraft has still not been disclosed.

“Loss of sovereignty”

Aam Aadmi Party’s Chief National Spokesperson, Priyanka Kakkar, criticised the ceasefire as a loss of sovereignty.

She accused the Indian government of being undermined by a foreign power, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “140 crore Indians were with the PM in this war between humanity and terrorism, but now we all feel cheated that a foreign power put a full stop on our internal matter… The PM should address the nation and explain why a foreign power did this, superseded the Indian government, and whether we can trust Pakistan after such a ceasefire.”
