NEW DELHI: A countrywide march led by Indian main opposition leader Rahul Gandhi reached New Delhi, the capital city of India, on Saturday, aiming to regain some of the popularity it has lost to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Over 1,000 people joined Rahul Gandhi’s long march against “hate and division,” which aimed to turn the Congress party’s fortunes around after its defeat by the ruling Indian nationalist party BJP in the 2019 general election.

The march, which has received a better response from the public than expected, will take a nine-day break in New Delhi before starting its final phase on 3rd January towards Srinagar.

Indian Congress Party’s popularity

Rahul Gandhi’s mother and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, party leader Robert Vadra, Priyanka Gandhi, joined Saturday’s long march.

After the last election, Rahul Gandhi had resigned as Congress president; the next election is due by 2024.

Rahul Gandhi tweeted a picture of himself hugging his mother, Sonia Gandhi, during the rally: “The love I have received from my mother is what I am sharing with India.”

The “Unite India Rally” march started in September in Kanyakumari on the southern end of India. The march plans to cover over 3,500 kilometres to reach Srinagar in about four months.
