NEW DELHI: The Indian state of Manipur has been placed under tight security, and a curfew has been imposed after protests by tribal groups turned violent.

The protests of tribal groups were sparked by the demand for affirmative action by the Meitei community of the state, who account for over 50% of the state’s population, demanding that they be included in the Scheduled Tribe category.

Communities under this category are given reserved seats in government jobs, college admissions, and elected positions to address historical injustices.

Other tribal communities in Manipur fear that they will have to fight for resources and jobs if the Meiteis are given Scheduled Tribe status.

Thousands of tribal people on Tuesday participated in a march opposing the demand, and the rally in Churachandpur district turned violent after protesters clashed with a group of people on Wednesday afternoon.

Manipur govt blames misunderstanding for incidents

The state government has blamed the incidents on a “prevailing misunderstanding” between communities and has said it is taking steps to control the situation. Mobile internet services also remained suspended in many parts of the state for five days, and the Indian Army carried out a flag march in the violence-hit areas on Thursday.

According to the Indian Express, the protest led to violence in Churachandpur and the neighboring Bishnupur district, but authorities have not confirmed reports of casualties.

The Chief Minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, has assured the public that the state government is taking all necessary measures to maintain law and order in the affected areas.
