WASHINGTON: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that the general polls in India this summer were not fought on a level playing field, asserting that the elections have destroyed the idea of Narendra Modi.

The Leader of the Opposition in Indian Parliament, who is currently on a four-day trip to the United States, made the remarks at the Georgetown University.  Addressing the event, he said that the ruling party had collapsed and was broken right down the middle. Rahul Gandhi stated that his party fought the polls with their bank accounts frozen.

He said, “It’s not just the PM, it’s deeper than that. What has occurred in India is that the coalition that brought Modi to power has collapsed.”

Adding that the Lok Sabha elections were not fought on the same footing, the opposition leader said, “I don’t see it as a free poll. I see it as a severely controlled election.” “I don’t believe that in a fair election, the BJP would come anywhere about 240 seats. I would be astonished,” he said, stating that the party had a “huge financial advantage”.

“The Election Commission was doing what they wished. The entire election campaign was structured so that Modi could carry out his agenda across India, with different designs for different states,” Gandhi claimed.
