ISLAMANBAD: A female doctor in India’s Maharashtra state has died by suicide after allegedly being raped and mentally harassed by two police officers, according to local authorities.

The woman, employed at a government hospital in Satara district, was found dead in a hotel room late Thursday, with a note accusing the officers of repeated abuse.

Her body was discovered hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan late on Thursday night, prompting authorities to be notified, said a police official, according to India Today.

The victim, originally from Beed district, was employed at a government hospital in Phaltan tehsil. In a suicide note written on her palm, she claimed that over the past five months, she had been subjected to rape and mental harassment by two Satara police officers.

Investigating the allegations

The Indian news website reported that she specifically accused sub-inspector Gopal Badane of repeatedly raping and sexually harassing her, and Prashant Bankar, another officer, of subjecting her to mental harassment.

“We have registered a case, and the body has been sent for a post-mortem. We are also investigating the allegations outlined in the suicide note,” stated an official from Satara police.

Meanwhile, the chairperson of the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, Rupali Chakankar, said, “We have taken cognizance of the matter and ordered Satara Police to take strict action against the accused.
