SRINAGAR: The Congress Party has strongly condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Indian government for pursuing policies detrimental to the people of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The Congress Party IIOJK chapter President, Vikar Rasool Wani, in a statement, urged party members to intensify efforts in holding the BJP accountable for what he described as its anti-people, anti-youth, anti-student, and anti-farmer policies.

Wani lambasted the BJP for allegedly engaging in vote-bank politics, manipulating public sentiment, and neglecting the welfare of the residents of IIOJK. He emphasized the Congress’s commitment to standing against such policies and advocating for the rights and interests of the people in the region.

Meanwhile, Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India and geopolitical analyst, Ashok Bhan, affirmed Rahul Gandhi’s role as the Leader of the Opposition in the Indian Parliament.

In a statement, Bhan highlighted the historical continuity of Gandhi family members assuming the role of Leader of the Opposition, noting Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure in 1989-90 and Sonia Gandhi’s from 1999-2004. While not a constitutional position, the Leader of the Opposition grants Rahul Gandhi certain privileges, including influence over the appointment process of civil servants and public officials.

Bhan underscored that Gandhi’s role will extend to participating in critical parliamentary committees such as Public Accounts, Public Undertakings, Estimates, and various Joint Parliamentary Committees. This position enables him to contribute significantly to the legislative oversight and decision-making processes within the Indian Parliament.
