NEW DELHI: The Narendra Modi-led Indian government has intensified its crackdown on individuals associated with the freedom movement in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The government has directed the IIOJK administration to seize assets, freeze bank accounts, and restrict finances linked to Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League, led by Masarat Alam Butt.
According to notifications issued by the Indian Home Ministry, both Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League (Masarat Alam faction) were declared unlawful outfits on December 31, 2023, and December 27, 2023, respectively, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
This move is part of the ongoing measures taken by the Indian government to curb dissent and opposition to its policies in the region. The seizure of assets is seen as a punitive action against those affiliated with the freedom movement, raising concerns about human rights violations and suppression of political dissent in the troubled region.
