ISLAMABAD: Two Indian airlines have said they would likely be impacted and their passengers inconvenienced after Pakistan banned the use of its airspace in a slew of countermeasures to respond to India’s actions against the country in the wake of Pahalgam incident in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), according to Dawn News.
According to the Times of India, some international flights remain impacted after the airspace closure by Pakistan. The newspaper cited IndiGo airline company as saying, “We’re closely monitoring the situation. Some of our international flights remain impacted.”
Closure of airspace
Pakistan’s top brass also announced a series of measures, including the closure of its airspace to all India-owned or Indian-operated airlines with immediate effect, Dawn News reported.
According to Radio Pakistan, Islamabad has vehemently rejected the Indian announcement to hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the National Security Committee, held in Islamabad today with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the chair.
The participants discussed the national security environment and the regional situation, particularly in the wake of Pahalgam attack in the Anantnag District of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday last, according to Radio Pakistan.
“Act of War”
The committee highlighted that the Indus Waters Treaty is a binding international agreement brokered by the World Bank and contains no provision for unilateral suspension, it added. Water is a Vital National Interest of Pakistan, a lifeline for its 240 million people and its availability will be safeguarded at all costs. Any attempt to stop or divert the flow of water belonging to Pakistan as per the Indus Waters Treaty, and the usurpation of the rights of lower riparian will be considered as an Act of War and responded with full force across the complete spectrum of National Power, Radio Pakistan reported.
