MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Govinda was hospitalized early Tuesday morning after accidentally shooting himself in the leg.

The incident took place at around 4:45 am when Govinda was preparing to leave for a flight to Kolkata, police said. While handling his licensed revolver, it slipped from his hand and discharged, with the bullet striking his knee.

Govinda was quickly rushed to Criti Care Hospital in Mumbai, where doctors successfully removed the bullet. His manager, Shashi Sinha, stated that the actor’s condition is stable and he is receiving appropriate medical care.

“The revolver apparently fell while being kept in the cupboard and misfired,” Sinha told the reporters.

Govinda, born Govind Arun Ahuja, is a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, having acted in over 165 films. He also served as a member of parliament from 2004 to 2009 with the Indian National Congress. The actor comes from a film family; his father, Arun Ahuja, and mother, Nirmala Ahuja, were also in the industry.  The actor is currently under medical supervision as police continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
