JOYNAGAR, India: In a tragic incident on Monday morning, Saifuddin Laskar, the local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and area president of Bamungachi in Joynagar, West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district in India, fell victim to a fatal shooting near his residence. The assailants, yet to be identified, targeted Laskar, leading to his untimely demise.
The news of Laskar’s death quickly sparked an outburst of violence as enraged supporters, incensed by the audacious attack on their leader, apprehended one of the alleged assailants. In a disturbing turn of events, a mob took matters into their own hands, subjecting the captured assailant to a brutal lynching, resulting in his death. The situation escalated as the community witnessed the grim aftermath of the retributive violence.
Amid the chaos, the blame game between political factions ensued. Local TMC leaders swiftly pointed fingers at CPI(M) supporters, accusing them of orchestrating the assassination of Saifuddin Laskar. In retaliation, purported supporters of Laskar reportedly vandalized houses and set fire to properties belonging to CPI(M) members in nearby areas.
Reacting to the incident, Sujan Chakraborty, a central committee member of the CPI(M), acknowledged the unfortunate loss of life. However, he emphasized the need for a thorough police investigation to apprehend the perpetrators and unravel any potential conspiracy behind the murder. Chakraborty dismissed the accusations against the CPI(M), attributing Laskar’s murder to internal strife within the TMC.
