ISLAMABAD: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Ambassador of China to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong discussed matters of bilateral importance, with a particular focus on the ongoing situation between Pakistan and India.

The Chinese envoy called upon President Zardari at the President House in Islamabad and reaffirmed his country’s support for Pakistan.

President Zardari expressed concern over the recent “irresponsible and aggressive rhetoric” of the Indian government, saying that such actions threaten regional peace and stability.

Enduring and time-tested friendship

The Chinese ambassador reaffirmed the enduring and time-tested friendship between China and Pakistan, describing the relationship as one of “ironclad brothers” who have always supported each other in challenging times.

He thanked the president for sharing Pakistan’s perspective and emphasised that China would always support Pakistan to achieve the common desire of both countries to secure peace and stability in South Asia.

The president conveyed his deep appreciation and gratitude to the Chinese government for its consistent support, which has always stood by Pakistan in difficult times.

Tensions flare up  

Tensions between Indians and Pakistanis over Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) have flared again. Relations have plunged to their lowest level in years.

The United Nations has urged the neighbours, who have fought multiple wars in the past, to show “maximum restraint”.

US President Donald Trump has downplayed the tensions, saying that the dispute will get “figured out, one way or another”.

Islamabad has warned that “any threat to Pakistan’s sovereignty and to the security of its people will be met with firm reciprocal measures”.
