IMPHAL: The Manipur Peoples’ Party (MPP) has called upon the state government to consider lifting the ban on internet services, which has been in effect since May 4.

The prolonged internet shutdown in Manipur has had severe consequences, causing disruptions in business activities and the education system, leading to a decline in various sectors across the state, said MPP returning officer K Muktasana during a press conference in Imphal.

Muktasana highlighted the adverse impact of the internet ban, emphasizing the negative effects it has had on businesses and educational institutions. The lack of internet access for over 50 days has hindered communication, hampered online transactions, and impeded the progress of education in Manipur.

Government’s Inability to Resolve Manipur Violence

Furthermore, the MPP representative alleged that security personnel have shown reluctance in engaging with Kuki militants, despite the shoot-at-sight orders issued on May 4. Muktasana suggested that this indicates a potential favoritism towards the Kuki militants over the Meiti villages by the central forces.

The appointment of Kuldiep Singh as the security advisor and the deployment of approximately 40,000 paramilitary forces were cited as evidence by Muktasana, suggesting an unofficial imposition of Article 355 in Manipur.

The MPP urged Chief Minister Biren Singh to take immediate action to restore peace in the region and implement a resettlement program for displaced individuals in their respective hometowns.
