NEW DELHI: Indian foreign minister S. Jaishankar said on Tuesday that India has scaled up troops’ deployment along its border with China to an unprecedented level.
He said India would not let China unilaterally change the status quo at the border.
His statement comes days after Chinese and Indian forces clashed in a disputed area along their border in Arunachal Pradesh state.
India said that the clash started due to encroachment by Chinese troops, BBC reported.
Situation on border is normal, China
On the other side, the Chinese foreign ministry said that the situation on the border was generally stable, and the two sides were maintaining talks on the issue.
China and India share a disputed 3440-kilometer-long de facto border—the Line of Control—which is poorly demarcated. Troops on either side come face to face at several points, and tensions sometimes escalate into clashes or skirmishes.
The latest skirmish occurred on December 9 and resulted in minor injuries to a few soldiers. However, both forces immediately disengaged from the area.
Jaishankar said that the purpose of such scaled-up deployment on the border was to counter Chinese aggression. The Indian army was ready to thwart any attempt to change the status quo.
