ISLAMABAD: Weeks after imposing land port restrictions on clothing exports from Bangladesh, India has reportedly ordered that Jute from Bangladesh will not be permitted to enter India through land ports on the India-Bangladesh border.

Indian media cited a notification as saying, “The restrictions will apply across all land and seaports, with the exception of the Nhava Sheva seaport in Mumbai”.

Port restrictions

Indian media cited Official sources as saying that the port restrictions on “jute and allied fibre/products from Bangladesh” have been implemented with immediate effect.

On the other hand, Dhaka Tribune has also reported that India has imposed a ban on the import of jute products and woven fabrics from Bangladesh through all land routes amid worsening relations between the two countries.

Jute products

The goods under these restrictions include jute products, flax tow and waste, jute and other bast fibres, jute, single flax yarn, single yarn of jute, multiple folded, woven fabrics or flax, and unbleached woven fabrics of jute, according to Dhaka Tribune.

It added that similar measures were taken earlier this year.  On May 17, India placed port restrictions on the import of items such as readymade garments and processed foods from Bangladesh.
