NEW DELHI: Rescue teams have restated drilling to reach 41 workers who have been stranded in a collapsed tunnel in northern India for about two weeks following a technical problem the day before deferred the rescue effort, authorities said on Friday.

The platform of the drilling apparatus became unbalanced while boring via rock wreckages on Thursday, briefly halting the final stage of digging at the site in Uttarakhand state of India for about twenty hours, local government spokesman, Kirti Panwar stated.

However, the spokesperson could not inform how long it would take time to complete the drilling and to bring the workers out. The workers have been stranded since November 12, when a landslide caused a section of the 4.5-kilo meter tunnel they were constructing to collapse regarding 200 meters from the entry point.

Authorities earlier released a footage from a camera pushed through the pipe that showed the workers in their construction hats moving around the blocked tunnel while communicating with rescue working on walkie-talkies.

The tunnel has been designed as part of the Chardham all-weather road, which will link different Hindu pilgrimage sites.

Some experts believe the project, will aggravate fragile conditions in the upper Himalayas, where several towns are built on landslide debris.
