New Delhi: India has taken a significant step to enhance its military deterrence along its borders with Pakistan and China by establishing new commando and drone units, along with acquiring modern carbines and anti-tank weapons. This move aims to bolster the country’s border security and defence capabilities.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, Lieutenant General Ajay Kumar, Director General of the Indian Army, announced that the first light commando battalion, dubbed the “Bhairav Battalion,” would be deployed on November 1. A total of 25 such battalions are expected to be raised over the next six months.

“Designed to be lean and lethal, these battalions are built for rapid, high-impact operations along India’s borders with China and Pakistan,” Kumar said, ahead of Infantry Day celebrations on Monday, reports South China Morning Post.

Specialist drone platoons

Each battalion will comprise 250 personnel from various arms, including infantry, artillery, signals, and air defence. To further enhance combat readiness, India has signed a US$332 million deal with two companies to supply 425,000 modern carbines, replacing its ageing submachine guns.

The new 5.56×45mm carbines, which will replace the 9x19mm Sterling models, are expected to be delivered within two years, with the first inductions set for September 2026. Pune-based Bharat Forge will supply 60 per cent of the carbines, while the remaining 40 per cent will come from PLR Systems, a joint venture between the Adani Group and Israel Weapon Industries.

Additionally, India has established 380 new specialist drone platoons, named “Ashni,” each consisting of 20 to 25 soldiers. To address anti-armour threats, the army has also secured an emergency acquisition of 12 FGM-148 Javelin launchers and 104 missiles.
