NEW DELHI, India: India has commissioned its second nuclear submarine, INS Arighaat, at Visakhapatnam, marking a significant boost to its naval capabilities and nuclear deterrence.

The Arihant-class submarine enhances India’s nuclear triad, promoting strategic balance and peace in the region while playing a crucial role in national security, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh,  hailed this milestone as a testament to the government’s commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in defence during the commissioning ceremony.

The INS Arighaat features advanced design, manufacturing technology, and complex engineering, and its systems are entirely indigenous, designed and built by Indian scientists, industry, and naval personnel.

The submarine’s technological advancements make it more advanced than its predecessor, INS Arihant, thereby strengthening India’s defence against potential adversaries. Singh commended the Indian Navy, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and local industries for their role in this achievement, noting that the project also boosted micro, small, and medium enterprises and created jobs.

Singh emphasized the need for rapid development in defence, particularly in today’s geopolitical climate. He recalled former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s leadership, which established India as a nuclear-armed state, stressing that a strong military is essential for India’s continued growth and security.
