NEW DELHI: India’s navy has announced plans to strengthen its forces on strategically vital islands near the Maldives, following recent tensions between the two nations. A new naval base is set to open on March 6 on India’s Lakshadweep islands, just days before the Maldives begins the process of sending home Indian security personnel.

The decision comes amidst strained relations between India and the Maldives, particularly since the election of President Mohamed Muizzu, who has expressed intentions to expel Indian forces and has fostered closer ties with China. India views China’s increasing presence in the Maldives with suspicion, given the archipelago’s location along crucial international shipping routes.

The new naval base, located on the island of Minicoy, will enhance India’s operational surveillance capabilities in the region. Situated approximately 130 kilometers north of the Maldives, Minicoy is strategically positioned to monitor sea lines of communication and safeguard against piracy and narcotics trafficking.

This move underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its interests in the Indian Ocean region and reflects its broader policy of enhancing security infrastructure on key islands. By bolstering its naval presence near the Maldives, India aims to maintain stability and protect its maritime interests amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics.
