SRINAGAR, Occupied Kashmir: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Indian government is accused by the Peoples Democratic Party of stifling freedom of expression.

In their ‘Speak Up’ newsletter’s November edition, the PDP highlighted the arbitrary arrest of nine journalists and expressed concern that if the current trend persists, it could result in the demise of democracy. They also noted the government’s warning to government employees against participating in protests or voicing grievances, signalling a broader crackdown on dissent.

The party expressed frustration, highlighting that Kashmiris faced restrictions on expressing solidarity with war-torn Palestine, unable to voice concerns or hold communal prayers for Palestinians. Criticizing the Election Commission, it sarcastically remarked on the indefinite postponement of occupied Kashmir elections, stating they’ll happen when the commission deems it’s the right time.

Timing has become an enigma, a puzzling factor, if you may. With no apparent disruptions, a facade of absolute normalcy, and no visible issues in governance, yet the opportune moment for elections remains elusive. Allowing our citizens the fundamental democratic freedom to elect their leadership appears unsettling to the government. Despite consistent tranquillity, the absence of conflict, and a flourishing economy, the mere mention of ‘elections’ casts a shadow of despair, it elaborated.
