UNITED NATIONS: India has abstained in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on a resolution that asked the International Court of Justice for its opinion on the legal consequences of Israeli forces’ prolonged occupation and annexation of the Palestinian territory.
The resolution titled, ‘Israeli practices affecting the human rights of the people of Palestine in the occupied territory of Palestine, including East Jerusalem’ was approved by a recorded vote, with 87 votes in favour, 26 votes against, and 53 nations, including India, abstaining from voting.
The resolution decided to request the United Nations’ highest judicial body to render an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from ongoing Israel’s violation of the right of the people of Palestine people to self-determination, from its prolonged occupation, annexation, and settlement of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including steps aimed at altering the demographic composition, character, and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem.”

It also asked the International Court of Justice, “how do the practices and practices of Israel… affect the legal status of the occupation of Palestinian territory, and what are the legal consequences that arise for all States and the UN from this status?” Israel and the US voted against the resolution, while France, Brazil, Japan, and Myanmar were among those that abstained.
Following the UNGA vote, World Jewish Congress President Ronald S Lauder, in a statement, said that the vote at the UN exemplifies an ongoing pattern of bias against Israel, and “we appreciate those 26 countries, including the US, who voted against this shameful resolution that wants to isolate and demonize the Jewish state.”
He said peace in the region “can only be negotiated by the Palestinian and Israeli sides directly involved.”
