According to local media reports, six people have been killed in a cross-border fight in India’s northeastern part. The killed people also include a forest official.
The Assam State Police said people from the neighboring state of Meghalaya attacked the police and security forces to free the timber carriers and their driver, who were arrested by the security forces before they could get off.
A police chief, Imdad Ali, told the Press Trust of India that people demanded the release of those arrested and attacked quickly, “which prompted the police to fire to bring the situation under control”. Five people died in the shooting, and a park ranger was also killed in a fight with residents of a neighboring state.

Earlier, Assam security forces at the gate arrested and detained three people, including the driver, who was forced to stop the vehicle after a bullet burst through his tire while transporting illegal timber. in the West Jaintia Hills in the state of Meghalaya, a government official said, adding that some managed to escape.

Conrad Sangma, the president of the northeastern state of Meghalaya, said that the tragedy happened in the village of Mukroh, West Jaintia Hills district, where six people were killed due to fire from the Assam Police and Assam Rangers.
“Out of the six people, five are residents of Meghalaya and one is from Assam Ranger,” he said in a statement on Twitter. He added, “Meghalaya government will do everything to ensure that justice is done and action will be taken against the perpetrators of this crime.”
Fearing public opinion, the Meghalaya state authorities have suspended internet access in some areas. The border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya has led to clashes between civil contractors, power companies, and telecom operators. The conflict started when Meghalaya was separated from the Khasi Hill region of Assam in 1972.
