Thousands of people took to the streets of Paris on Sunday to protest rising prices as weeks of unrest over higher wages in the oil industry dampened demand for a strike.

The leader of the left-wing La France Insoumise party, Jean-Luc Melenchon, participated in the march along with this year’s Nobel laureate, Annie Ernaux. He made a call for a general strike on Tuesday.

The march followed a call from the NUPES parliamentary group, who are hoping to turn the page on allegations of domestic violence that have plagued leaders recently.

Finance Minister Gabriel Attal said that the left-wing parties are trying to take advantage of the current situation, which is marked by the continued shutdown of the French nuclear power company EDF and oil-producing refineries.
