LONDON: London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced that Ramadan will be commemorated for the first time with a light show in the heart of London, no less than Piccadilly Circus.
With the first glimpse of the crescent moon tonight (Wednesday, March 22), Ramadan 2023 officially begins. The Islamic holiday of fasting and prayer lasts until Friday, April 21 at dusk.
According to the Mayor, in London this year, though, there is a viable difference to the festival. Ramadan will be commemorated for the first time with a light show in the heart of London, no less than Piccadilly Circus. In the UK and Europe, Ramadan Lights is the first street illumination to commemorate the holy month.
Up to April 21, it will remain burning on Coventry Street (between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, where the Trocadero is located). The 61 moons comprise about 30,000 lights that are more energy-efficient LEDs for sustainability, and the installation’s carbon footprint will be offset.
