LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has called upon the Supreme Court of Pakistan to play a pivotal role in preserving democracy amidst the ongoing crackdown by the incumbent government on the PTI.
Khan expressed concern over the mistreatment of women since May 9, emphasizing that such oppression was unprecedented in the nation’s history and part of a deliberate plan.
Khan stressed the importance of empowering women in politics, noting that their exclusion would be a grave tragedy as they represent half of Pakistan’s population. He highlighted the PTI’s inclusive approach, where women actively participate in political activities alongside their families, as a reason behind the ruling dispensation’s opposition.
The PTI leader emphasized the significance of an independent judiciary in protecting fundamental rights and upholding the rule of law, which ultimately fosters true democracy by holding government powers accountable.
He referred to the praise he received from world leaders for his government’s performance, citing former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s commendation of the Khan’s “billion-tree tsunami” initiative during his speech at the United Nations.
PTI Members Leaving Party Under Duress: Imran Khan
Addressing the recent exodus of PTI members, Khan claimed that they were leaving the party under duress and were declared innocent as soon as they distanced themselves from the PTI, in an effort to shield their families from the alleged tyranny of the current regime.
Imran Khan appealed to the Supreme Court to take suo moto notice of the harsh treatment faced by women protesters who were incarcerated, asserting that some of them had experienced abuse. He demanded a judicial inquiry into the riots that occurred on May 9, suggesting that while those responsible for damaging the Jinnah House should be held accountable, peaceful protesters should be released.
Furthermore, Khan criticized what he perceived as a mockery of justice in the country, highlighting the swift clearance of cases against party members who declared their departure from the PTI. He warned that such a situation reflected a law of the jungle prevailing in the nation.
Imran Khan urged the Supreme Court to intervene and protect fundamental rights, emphasizing that the court’s efforts in upholding these rights would be remembered in history, either positively or negatively.
