LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan may not physically participate and address public gatherings to be held in connection with the by-elections for the National Assembly seats.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is going to conduct by-elections for the National Assembly seats vacated by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf lawmakers on March 16. The members from the Imran-led party had resigned from their NA seats following the no-confidence move that toppled Imran Khan from the premiership in April 2022.
Virtual address
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief will address the election campaign meetings through video link, per the strategy hammered out by the senior leadership of the party, said the party sources.
The decision that Imran will not physically appear at the public meetings was taken by the PTI’s senior leadership mainly due to the threats to his life. Imran Khan was shot in the leg on December 3 as he waved to crowds from a truck-mounted container while leading a protest march in Wazirabad of Gujranwala to pressure the government into announcing snap polls. However, the PTI march was cut short in Rawalpindi.
During a virtual press conference on January 27, the PTI chief had accused Pakistan Peoples’ Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari of hatching and financing an assassination plot against him for which, he added, the PPP chief had hired terrorists. Zardari sent a Rs10 billion legal notice to Khan on January 30 for levelling baseless allegations.
Several political leaders, including ones from the ruling coalition have called for an independent investigation into his allegations.
