ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan has said that his party will sweep the upcoming general elections irrespective of the situation, whether he is in jail or not, adding that the incumbent government wanted to get rid of him. Still, they would be failed to do so.
While talking to the American media group NPR (National Public Radio), Imran Khan said he does not know if he will get disqualified but that it also “doesn’t matter” as he believes his party has an unprecedented popularity wave in Pakistan’s history.
Imran Khan further said that the current government is petrified of elections and knew that PTI might win the polls. Therefore, Khan said they were trying everything to get him out of the way, including assassination.
When asked if the election would be held in time as scheduled earlier, Imran Khan said as per the constitution, after the dissolving of the provincial government, the elections had to be held within 90 days.
Curbs on media in PTI-led government
Responding to a question regarding curbs on media during Khan’s tenure, Imran khan rebutted all such statements.
“We never interfered with the media. The only time there were problems with the media was not because of us, because of the army, because of the army establishment,” Imran Khan said.
However, it is worth noting that at that time, Imran Khan was defending all his actions, including those against the media, and he never hinted at any such move towards establishment at that time.
To another question, the PTI Chairman said that he believed in the rule of law and that his fight to bring the powerful elite under the law will be continued if he gets a chance to come into power in the future. He added that the difference between poor and rich nations was not due to a lack of resources but because of their approach toward the rule of law and its implementation.
