IMF Not Happy with Pakistan Over Waiver on Petroleum Products

ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed dissatisfaction over the lowering of prices of petroleum products by Pakistan.

Sources said that the International Monetary Fund has asked Pakistan to increase the levy on petroleum products to be able to receive the next tranche of the installment Pakistan is expecting in the coming months.

IMF asks Pakistan to hike prices

According to sources, the International Monetary Fund has expressed dissatisfaction over the latest price lowering and asked Pakistan to hike the levy on diesel in January and February.

The sources said that the government has decided not to give further relief to consumers on diesel next month.

The finance ministry sources said that the petroleum levy would be increased by Rs20 in the next two months.

According to the sources, there is an agreement with the IMF to impose a levy of Rs50 per litre on diesel. The IMF has also asked Pakistan to increase the tax-to-GDP ratio.
