ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued a summons for Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar to appear in person on November 29 in connection with the missing Baloch students case.
The court’s directive comes as part of the ongoing proceedings related to the implementation of recommendations put forth by the Baloch Enforced Disappearance Commission.
During the hearing, Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani expressed disappointment over the report submitted by the federal government’s committee. The court had previously summoned the report within a week, seeking updates on the status of the 55 missing Baloch students. Justice Kayani remarked that the report was a “shame for the court,” emphasizing the Prime Minister and Interior Minister’s responsibility in addressing the matter.
The court’s order also instructed the government to present the 55 missing Baloch students in accordance with the recommendations of the commission. The directive highlights the court’s commitment to resolving cases of enforced disappearances and holding authorities accountable for the non-recovery of individuals.
Simultaneously, the additional attorney-general for Pakistan has requested the court not to summon the premier and ministers. However, Justice Kayani emphasized the significance of the Baloch students’ case and the need for government officials, including the Prime Minister and Interior Minister, to recognize its importance.
In response to the enforced disappearances issue, a federal cabinet committee, headed by the Interior Minister, has been established to review such cases. The committee, consisting of the law and defence ministers, is tasked with collaborating on resolving enforced disappearance cases and may seek assistance from human rights organizations in the process.
The developments underscore the judiciary’s active role in addressing human rights concerns, particularly in cases involving the disappearance of individuals. The summons to the Caretaker Prime Minister reflects the court’s commitment to ensuring accountability and seeking resolution in cases of missing persons.
