ISLAMABAD: Irked at the Islamabad inspector general of police’s failure to appear before the Islamabad High Court on Thursday despite notice over contempt proceedings related to ex-PTI leader Shireen Mazari’s 5th arrest, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb remarked that the whole state machinery was being used for political gains.

At the start of the hearing, the additional attorney-general told the court that the IGP was getting late due to another hearing before bench 1. To this, the judge said, “Could have informed us on day one that Mazari’s arrest had nothing to do with the Maintenance of Public Order and was entirely political. We would have taken other cases instead.”

He added that this is a contempt case, and the IGP must have appeared in person. The court then summoned the IGP at the next hearing slated for 31 May and sought a written reply. Mazari’s daughter, Imaan Mazari and her lawyer Zainab Janjua were present in the court.

Shireen Mazari’s arrest

On 22 May, ex-federal minister Shireen Mazari was arrested from outside Adiala Jail for the 5th time in 12 days despite court orders for her release. According to her lawyers, the court had nullified the second MPO case against Mazari. The next day, the Islamabad High Court summoned the federal capital’s IGP over a contempt plea filed in this regard.
