ISLAMABAD/NEW YORK: “Listen carefully to me. This council should stop you. It is their responsibility. It is the responsibility of all states to uphold international law and the historic status quo [of Haram Al-Sharif]. They should stop you. But make no mistake: If they don’t, our Palestinian people will,” this was what the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour exactly said to his Israeli counterpart while sitting across from him in the United Nations Security Council chamber, reported Arab News.
Palestinian envoy’s stance in UNSC
Riyad remarks came at an emergency UNSC meeting convened by the China and UAE to discuss a surprise visit of appointed Itamar Ben-Gvir Israeli National Security Minister to Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem on Tuesday.
The Palestinian envoy asked the UNSC to take concrete action against what he called Israel’s “absolute contempt for us, and the entire global community.” Riyad also said that Ben-Gvir’s visit displayed utter disregard for the sanctity of the Palestinian life, a sanctity of international law and the sanctity of Al-Haram Al-Sharif.
Mansour said that “Our people are running out of patience,” and also said that “the moderation and sense of responsibility we display could never be construed as weakness. “Record shows that the Israel’s persistence on this path has not led to surrender, but to uprising.” He called on the nations who were committed to int’l law and peace to act and “not lament once the fire spreads beyond control.
