KOLKATA, India: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has issued a threat that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attempts to explode a fire in her state, it will not spare Bihar, Assam, Manipur or even Delhi.
Her remarks come at a time when the region is embroiled in protest demonstrations from the doctors, and ordinary citizens in the wake of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. BJP has claimed that the West Bengal government failed the case probe to shield some of its aides involved in the rape case. She said, “Modi babu, you want that fire to spread in Bengal. Then you should realize that if a fire starts in Bengal, Assam and Bihar will not be spared, it will not stop at Odisha or Manipur. It will also reach Delhi and we will topple your chair.”

In response, BJP state chief and union minister, Sukanta Majumdar has accused Mamata of making “anti-national” remarks and urged the government to take action.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) government has been on the backfoot ever since the gruesome details of the crime emerged. The laziness of the Kolkata Police in handling the case was exposed during a Supreme Court hearing where the bench, headed by Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, gave a scolding to the authorities.

The bench has termed the delay by the Police in registering the unnatural death case in the rape-murder of the postgraduate doctor “extremely disturbing”.
