DOHA: Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri has welcomed the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on Friday, considering it a significant development that contributed to isolating Israel and exposing its brutal actions in Gaza.
In a statement, Abu Zuhri called for enforcing the court’s decisions on the occupation.
The ICJ ordered Israel to prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians and allow more aids to Gaza. The court ordered Israel to increase efforts to protect civilians. However, it did not mandate an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza war, as sought by South Africa.
A panel of 17-judges said that it has jurisdiction to rule over emergency measures sought by South Africa in its case against Israel’s war in Gaza. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) said it would not dismiss the case, as Israel requested.
Joan E. Donoghue, the court’s president, said, the ICJ is fully aware of the extent of the human tragedy in the region and is deeply concerned about the continuing loss of life and human lives.
The ruling, while falling short of a binding order to stop the conflict, represents a legal setback for Israel.
Islamic Jihad, another Palestinian group, criticized the ICJ for not immediately calling for a halt to the fighting, attributing it to the influence of global powers on the legal system.
