ICC World Cup: New Zealand Beat Netherlands to Register 2nd Win in Mega Event

HYDERABAD: New Zealand Beat Netherlands by 99 runs in their World Cup Match being played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad, India on Monday. With the win, Kiwis registered their second win and booked first place on the points table both with points and net run-rate. 

Chasing a huge target of 323-run, the Dutch openers took a steady start; however, they lost their first wicket, Vikramjit Singh, on 12 in the 6th over when the score reached 21. He was bowled out by Matt Henrry. The Dutch lost their second wicket to the opener Maz O’Dowd in the 11th over, who scored 16 runs to the total. Meanwhile, the number third batter, Colin Ackerman, showed resistance and played some brilliant strokes.

Number four Bas De Leede took the innings ahead with him; however, he was removed by Ravindra on 18 while facing 25 deliveries. After the dismissal of De Leede, Ackerman was joined by Teja Nidamanuru. Both were on the crease when the Dutch reached 114 in 25 overs. However, in the next over, while taking a second run amid some confusion with the fellow batter, Teja Nidamanuru got run out on 21, resulting in the fourth dismissal for the Dutch.

In the next over, Colin Ackerman also completed his half-century. After a couple of overs later, he was removed by Santner on 69 while facing 73 balls. When the total reached 175 in the 35th over, Netherlands lost their 6th wicket to Scott Edwards, who added 30 runs to the total. Santner got his 4th wicket when he dismissed number eight batter Der Merve on one run. At that stage, the Dutch were 183 for 7 in 37 overs. On 198, Netherlands lost their 8th wicket when Ryan Klein was dismissed by Santner to reach his 5-wicket haul. Klein scored just runs on 15 balls. In the end, Sybrand Engelbrecht showed some resistance while adding some quick runs but soon was caught on the mid-wicket boundary on the bowling of Matt Henrry on 29. Later, the Dutch side was all out for 223 runs in the 47th over.

From New Zealand, Santner was the most successful bowler, grabbing five wickets while conceding 59 runs in his 10-over spill. Henry got three wickets, while Ravindra grabbed one wicket.

Earlier winning the toss, Netherlands invited New Zealand to bat on a flat track where Kiwis batters Will Young, Ravindra, and Daryl Mitchel took New Zealand into a decent total of 322 for the loss of seven wickets in the 50 overs.

The Dutch pacers bowled the first two overs as maidens; however, from the third overs, the Kiwis launched the Batton charge to reach the first 50 runs in just 8 overs and then moved on till they lost the first wicket of Devon Convey on 32 in the 13th over. Young was joined by the number third the inform Ravindra, and both the batters accelerated the innings with a better run rate. Both completed their half-centuries till Young was dismissed by Meekeren on 70 when the total score reached 144 in the 27th over. In the 33rd over, the Kiwis lost the 3rd wicket of Ravindra at 51. 

The Kewis were managed to accelerate the innings; however, Dutch blowers (particularly Meekeren) also managed to take wickets with intervals. After the third loss, Mitchel and Latham pushed the scoreboard ahead to take their side beyond 200. In the 41st over, Meekeren removed dismissed Daryl Mitchel on 48 while facing 47 balls. At the time, New Zealand was 238 for 4. The Dutch managed to check the pace of the Kiwis and got another wicket on 247 when Glenn Philips was caught behind the wicket on 4 on the bowling of De Leede.

On 254 in the 45th over, the Dutch took another wicket of Mark Chapman, who scored just 5 runs. At the time, it seemed the Dutch would manage to restrict the Kiwis below 280. However, Tom Latham was on the crease, who, along with Santner, added some crucial runs to the total. Meanwhile, Tom Latham completed his half-century as well. When both the batters took the score to 293 in 48.4 overs, Dutch spinner Aryan Dut managed to remove Latham on 53. However, Santner added some quick runs (36) to take his team to a decent total of 322 runs in 50 overs.
