LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) former Chairman Ijaz Butt died at the age of 85 on Thursday in Lahore. Butt’s family confirmed the news, stating that the former Test cricketer had been battling health issues for the past two years.
Ijaz Butt, who played eight Test matches for Pakistan, served as the PCB chairman from 2008 to 2011, a tumultuous period marked by multiple changes in the team management. Despite the challenges, his tenure also witnessed a significant achievement for Pakistan cricket, as the national team clinched the ICC T20 World Cup in 2009.
Through its official Twitter account, the PCB conveyed its heartfelt condolences on the departure of the former Test cricketer and ex-PCB chairman. Ijaz Butt’s Cricket Career
Born on 10 March 1938 in Sialkot, he made his mark as a wicketkeeper-batter and represented Pakistan in eight Tests from 1959 to 1962.
During his Test debut against West Indies in the 1958-59 season, Ijaz Butt showcased his batting prowess as an opener, contributing a crucial 41 not out in a remarkable 10-wicket victory. He also faced Australia twice, and in December 1959, he scored his only half-century at Karachi.
Over his short Test career, Butt amassed 279 runs at an average of 19.92. Besides, he participated in 67 first-class matches. His last match came at the Oval against England in 1962.
He was elected as the manager of the Pakistan team for the Australia tour in 1982 and headed the selection committee multiple times.
The PCB Management Committee Chairperson, Zaka Ashraf, also expressed his deep condolences over Ijaz Butt’s departure on behalf of the PCB. He said that
