NEW DELHI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned India’s women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur for two matches and fined her 75 percent of her match fee for her on-field behaviour and verbal swipe at umpires during the match against Bangladesh.

Kaur admitted to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision” and “public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match,” according to an ICC statement. She accepted her punishment for the actions that took place during the one-day international against Bangladesh, which ended in a rare tie.

India Women’s Cricket Captain’s Verbal Swipe at Umpires

The incident occurred when Kaur was given out on 14 and she reacted by hitting the stumps. Later, she publicly criticized the umpiring, which led to her suspension. During the post-match presentation, Kaur suggested that the umpires join the Bangladeshi team on stage, resulting in the Bangladesh players opting out of a joint photo session.

Harmanpreet Kaur is a prominent figure in Indian women’s cricket and played a crucial role in the launch of the women’s equivalent of the lucrative Indian Premier League earlier this year. However, her recent behaviour has been heavily criticized by former players, including Diana Edulji and Madan Lal.

Edulji, a former women’s captain, expressed her disappointment in a column in the Indian Express, saying that Kaur had set a bad example for her teammates. Madan Lal, an Indian men’s World Cup winner, also condemned Kaur’s conduct, stating that she is not above the game and should face strict disciplinary action from Indian cricket authorities.
