DAVOS: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said that she backed listing Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) as a “terrorist organization” to reply to the “trampling” of human rights in the country. Relations between the EU and Tehran have deteriorated in recent months as efforts to restore nuclear dialogue have also stalled.

Tehran has detained several European citizens and the EU has become increasingly critical of a continuing crackdown on protesters, including executions.
Ursula von der Leyen told the media on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, Davos that the reaction of Tehran is terrible and they are squashing over human rights.

The EU is discussing a fourth round of sanctions against Tehran over the crackdown and Iran’s supply of weapons to Russia, Arab news reported.
Von der Leyen said that they are looking indeed at new sanctions and she would back also listing the Revolutionary Guards.

Countrywide anti-government protest demonstrations erupted in Iran in September following the death of an Iranian woman Mahsa Amini.
Tehran said that it would take tough action against protesters and it has described as rioters, accusing enemies including the US of fomenting the political unrest.
