Hurricane Otis: 48 Dead in Southern Mexico

MEXICO: Acapulco was struggling Sunday to recover from the extremely powerful Hurricane Otis, which claimed at least 48 lives across southern Mexico, Western media reported.

According to AFP, the Hurricane Otis also provoked power, water and phone outages. The attractive tourist spot, which once attracted Hollywood stars including Elvis Presley and Elizabeth Taylor, had never experienced such like Otis.

The powerful hurricane’s death counts increased Sunday as 5 more people were confirmed dead in north of the city. Authority said that about 36 people were still missing after the storm.

He current situation frustrated survivors, who for days were not able to communicate with loved ones to let them know about their safety and criticized the authorities for an insufficient response.

According to the authorities, about 273,000 houses, 600 hotels and more than 120 hospitals were damaged, with a number businesses in ruins due to the hurricane.
