MEXICO CITY: Tropical Storm Hilary strengthened into a dangerous hurricane in the Pacific on Thursday and was likely to intensify further as it approaches the Baja California peninsula in Mexico over the weekend, forecasters said.
Heavy rainfall was also expected in the southwestern US from Friday as the storm moves north, the United States National Hurricane Center said.
Winds in Hurricane
NHC said that Hilary was packing maximum sustained winds of about 195 kilometers (120 miles) an hour, according to AFP. That made it a major Category 3 hurricane — the third most powerful on the Saffir-Simpson scale of one to five.
Hilary was about 445 miles south of the tourist location Cabo San Lucas on Baja California’s southern tip, according to NHC.
