BUDAPEST, Hungry: Hungary, the final obstacle to Sweden’s NATO membership bid, is scheduled to hold a crucial vote on the issue next Monday, according to a senior official from the ruling party.

Mate Kocsis, the leader of Fidesz parliamentary group, announced on Tuesday via Facebook that he had formally requested the inclusion of a vote on Sweden’s NATO accession in the parliamentary agenda for February 26, 2024. Kocsis emphasized that their parliamentary group intends to support the proclamation of the Protocol of Accession of the Kingdom of Sweden to the North Atlantic Treaty.

Hungary’s decision holds significant importance as it marks the last hurdle for Sweden’s aspiration to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The move comes amidst growing tensions in Europe and concerns over regional security.

Sweden’s bid to join NATO has been met with mixed reactions, with some countries advocating for its inclusion to strengthen the alliance, while others express reservations over potential geopolitical implications.

The upcoming vote in Hungary signals a critical juncture in shaping the security landscape of the region. It reflects Hungary’s stance on NATO enlargement and its commitment to regional security cooperation.
