HOUSTON, USA: Hundreds of individuals gathered for the funeral prayer of Dr Talat Jahan, a Pakistani-origin US doctor in Houston on Wednesday.

Dr Jahan, aged 52, was stabbed to death in her apartment complex in Conroe, Texas.

Besides hundreds of mourners, the deceased’s husband, son, daughter, and brother, Wajahat Khan, as well as Pakistan’s Consul General in Houston Aftab Chaudhry also attended the funeral.

People bade farewell to the Pakistani doctor in an emotional service that took place at Hamza Mosque in Houston, with tears and grief palpable among the attendees.

The 52-year-old Karachi native met a brutal end in front of her Conroe apartment. The suspect, 24-year-old Joseph Fridich, was subsequently arrested.

Eyewitnesses said that the assailant even checked the victim’s pulse after the attack, intensifying the horror of the situation. The motive behind the crime remains undetermined.

However, there is a prevailing belief that it might have been a hate crime, and the suspect could be suffering from mental instability.

Dr. Khan had relocated to Houston, residing with her 14-year-old daughter, just two months before this tragic incident, while her husband remained in Seattle with their son. She was a 1996 graduate of Sindh Medical College and had been practising as a paediatrician at a renowned children’s hospital.

Following the funeral service, Dr Khan’s brother, Wajahat, said his sister was a philanthropic and compassionate individual, and hoped that justice would prevail.

The deceased’s body will be transported to Seattle, her previous place of residence, reflecting her recent move to Houston to live with her daughter.
