DUBAI: Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali forged a record-breaking 154-run partnership for the sixth wicket, rescuing Bangladesh from collapse against India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match in Dubai on Thursday.
Bangladesh found themselves in dire straits after opting to bat first, with Mohammed Shami striking early in the very first over. Axar Patel nearly claimed a hat-trick, but Rohit Sharma’s fumble of an easy catch in the ninth over kept him from achieving that feat, leaving Bangladesh reeling at a precarious 35-5.
The dropped catch belonged to Jaker Ali, who alongside Hriody, embarked on an extraordinary journey through one of the most memorable partnerships in Bangladesh’s ODI saga.
Despite the challenges posed by India’s formidable spin trio—Axar, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav—the duo battled fiercely, guiding Bangladesh to a respectable 189-5 before their remarkable alliance was finally severed in the 43rd over.
What records did Jaker Ali and Tawhid Hridoy break with their partnership?
The remarkable 154-run partnership has etched itself into the annals of Champions Trophy history, becoming the most prolific collaboration for the sixth wicket or lower.
This achievement eclipses the previous record of 131 runs set by Mark Boucher and Justin Kemp for South Africa against Pakistan during the 2006 tournament.
Moreover, this partnership stands as Bangladesh’s highest sixth-wicket alliance in ODI history, surpassing the unbeaten 150-run partnership between Jaker and Mahmudullah in their previous encounter against the West Indies in December 2024.
Additionally, this partnership marks Bangladesh’s highest for any wicket against India in ODIs and represents the highest sixth-wicket partnership by any team facing India.
