ADEN: Yemen’s Houthis launched a missile attack on the US aircraft carrier Eisenhower in the Red Sea, in response to US and British strikes on Yemen, said Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree on Friday.

A US defense official, however, told Arab media that the group’s claim was false.

Saree in a televised statement said six US and British strikes killed 16 people and injured 41, including civilians.

He added the strikes on the province of Hodeida targeted the port of Salif, Ghalifa camp, a radio building in Al-Hawk district and two houses.

The US and British militaries said they carried out strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen on Thursday to deter the group from further disrupting the Red Sea shipping line.

The US Central Command said the US and British forces had hit 13 targets in Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen.

The British defense ministry added the joint operation targeted three locations in the city of Hodeida, which according it housed surface-to-air weapons and drones.

Houthi spokesperson Mohamed Abdelsalam termed the strikes as brutal aggression against Yemen and punishment for its support of Gaza.

Iran while condemning the strikes said they were violations of Yemen’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, international laws and human rights.

Spokesperson for Iranian foreign ministry Nasser Kanaani said the US and British governments were responsible for the consequences of such crimes against the people of Yemen.
