SYDNEY: Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles announced on Monday that authorities have abandoned hope of finding survivors after a military helicopter crashed into the sea during a large-scale war games exercise over the weekend.

The tragic incident involved the MRH-90 Taipan helicopter, which had been participating in the Talisman Sabre exercise, a joint operation that brought together 30,000 military personnel from Australia, the United States, and several other nations.

Initially, rescuers held on to slim hopes of finding the four crew members alive, but their hopes were shattered when significant wreckage from the aircraft was discovered. The helicopter had gone down near the Whitsunday Islands during a nighttime operation, leaving little chance for the crew to survive the catastrophic impact, according to Arab News.

Minister Marles expressed his deep condolences to the families of the fallen crew members and acknowledged the gravity of their sacrifice. He said, “The loss of these four men is as significant and meaningful as the loss of anyone who has worn our nation’s uniform. Amidst the inadequacy of these words, I want them to know they stand in the warm embrace of the entire nation.”

The MRH-90 Taipan helicopters have been a crucial part of Australia’s fleet, but the recent incident has raised concerns. The fleet, comprising more than 40 helicopters, was scheduled for retirement by the end of 2024. However, all operations involving the Taipans have been grounded until investigators can ascertain the cause of the crash. Minister Marles emphasized that they won’t be flying again until a clear understanding of the situation is achieved, and necessary modifications or actions are taken.

This is not the first instance of trouble with the European-made Taipans. Earlier this year, the fleet was grounded for a month after one of the helicopters experienced an engine failure during a nighttime training exercise, leading to an emergency ditching into the ocean. Australian officials have previously highlighted difficulties with maintenance and obtaining spare parts for these helicopters.

Efforts to find the four men and recover the remaining wreckage have been ongoing, but the mission has been complicated by strong currents and tidal movements in the area. Sonar equipment has been utilized to identify pieces of the helicopter wreckage, and specialist divers will be brought in to assist in the search.

Chief of Defense Angus Campbell assured the public that every possible measure would be taken to bring the fallen crew members back to their families and regiments. He stated, “This effort will continue. We’ll be bringing our mates home to their families and to their regiments.”

As the nation mourns the loss of these brave servicemen, the investigation into the cause of the accident remains a top priority. The Australian Defense Force and international partners involved in the Talisman Sabre exercise will be working together to ensure a thorough examination of the incident.

The tragic event serves as a solemn reminder of the risks military personnel face during training exercises and operations. The entire nation stands united in grief, expressing gratitude for the dedicated service of these four men who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
