ISLAMABAD: Hong Kong is open to welcoming the world back, its Chief Executive John Lee said on Thursday, pledging over half a million free flights and publicity to revitalize the once-vibrant global hub after 3 years of Covid-19-enforced isolation.

The rebranding campaign of the government, “Hello, Hong Kong” presents itself as an effort to tell good stories about the southern city of China, where years of political oppression and pandemic curbs have destroyed its business-friendly image.

During a speech to tourism and business heavyweights, Chief Executive John Lee announced half a million free air tickets for visitors to see the hustle and bustle in the city

The giveaway will open next month and mainly will be distributed by local airlines Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong, and HK Express Airlines.

Another eighty thousand tickets will be given to residents in the summer, however, the carriers are yet to announce the destinations.

What saved Hong Kong?

Adherence to China’s zero-Covid policy of quarantine, closed borders, and face masks largely saved Hong Kong from the virus until a lethal Omicron outbreak at the onset of 2022.

It also contributed to a financial recession and the exodus of over 2.5% of the population.

Even as businessmen warned the city would require a full Covid-19 exit plan before any meaningful reboot, authorities insisted on gradually lifting restrictions.
