TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras: Honduran authorities Friday said that a US citizen suspected of murdering three women on one of its Caribbean islands had been apprehended in the Dominican Republic.
According to the Honduran government, Gilbert Reyes is accused of “aggravated femicide and murder” and was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice.
A statement by the government said that evidence collected at the crime scene and witness testimony implicated him in the triple murder on the island of Roatan, popular with tourists.
According to relatives, on January 6, the young women had gone out with Reyes and a day later he left the country.
The victims were reported missing and later found dead in a vehicle with gunshot marks.
Honduran attorney general Johel Zelaya wrote on X that proceedings to extradite Reyes were under way.
According to UN data, Honduras has the fifth highest femicide rate globally — 6.47 per 100,000 women — and is the most dangerous country in Latin America for women.
Some 380 femicides were recorded last year, the Observatory of Violence of the National Autonomous University of Honduras has said.
