LOS ANGELES: Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet and other leading figures in global cinema will compete for trophies on Sunday at the Golden Globe Awards, one of Hollywood’s most closely watched film and television ceremonies ahead of the Academy Awards.
The champagne-fuelled event will be held in Beverly Hills, California, and will be hosted for a second time by comedian Nikki Glaser.
The ceremony begins at 8 pm Eastern time and will be broadcast live on CBS, with streaming available on Paramount+.
DiCaprio’s film One Battle After Another leads the movie nominations. The dark comedy follows a washed-up revolutionary who is forced back into action when his daughter’s life is threatened.
DiCaprio was nominated alongside his co-stars Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti and Teyana Taylor.
The Warner Bros production will compete in the best movie musical or comedy category against Marty Supreme, a table tennis-themed film starring Chalamet, and black comedy Bugonia, among others.
Drama contenders
The best movie drama category includes Jay Kelly, starring George Clooney as an actor struggling with his legacy, alongside Adam Sandler as his loyal manager.
Other drama nominees include Guillermo del Toro’s reimagining of Frankenstein, supernatural horror film Sinners, and Hamnet, which explores the family life of playwright William Shakespeare.
Acting nominees across film categories include Chalamet, Dwayne Johnson for The Smashing Machine, Michael B. Jordan for Sinners, Jessie Buckley for Hamnet, and Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo for the musical sequel Wicked: For Good.
Television and podcasts
Television awards will also be presented, with HBO’s resort mystery series The White Lotus leading nominations in the TV categories.
Netflix’s limited series Adolescence, centred on a 13-year-old accused of murder, follows closely behind.
For the first time, the Golden Globes will present an award for podcasts.
Nominees include Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Call Her Daddy, Good Hang with Amy Poehler and The Mel Robbins Podcast.
Host and reforms
Glaser said she had toned down the sharp humour that has previously defined the Globes’ opening monologues.
“They shouldn’t be worried because I really have made this set so that it doesn’t ruin anyone’s night,” she said.
“I don’t think I’m going to have to avoid anyone at the after-party.”
The Golden Globes are among the first major Hollywood honours of 2026, ahead of the Academy Awards in March.
While Globe voters do not take part in Oscar voting, a win can boost visibility for potential Academy Award contenders.
Awards are decided by more than 300 entertainment journalists, compared with about 9,000 voters who select the Oscars.
The voting body was expanded in recent years, with organisers introducing reforms following criticism over ethics and diversity.
