ISLAMABAD: An official from the Agronomic Research Station Khanewal has warned the farmers that Rabi crops may have to witness high temperatures in the coming days and advised them to take extra care of their canola and wheat crops in the most important during from February to March.
In a Wednesday statement, Dr. Asmatullah Malik said that February and March were the most critical months for Rabi crops. The possible forecast of high temperatures with dry weather conditions might be a threat and urged farmers to do crop inspections on daily bases.
He advised farmers not to let crops be water-stressed and arrange water supply when crops require it. He also advised them to complete the application of nitrogenous fertilizers on the wheat crop as soon as possible.
Extra Care for Rabi Crops
Dr. Asmatullah further said that wheat was sown on 480,000-acre the Khanewal district, only 9-10 percent below the acreage recorded last time.
He attributed wheat area reduction to an increase in oil seed crop cultivation, adding that a 50,000-acre area was brought under oil seed cultivation in the current year in Khanewal, some 300 percent more than the previous year.
Dr. Asmatullah said the increase in an oilseed crop area was also better for national food production. He urged farmers to give extra attention to their wheat crop to get increased per acre production from wheat fields for compensation against the lost wheat area.
